Abolitionists were an extension of the church because the movement was deeply rooted in the Second Great Awakening.
INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTURAL
The Southern workforce was plantations using forced labor of black enslaved people making enslaved people a property of slave owners.
The Southern climate determined the main economic activities through the long growing season and fertile soil that was used to grow crops for profit.
The Northern workforce is of hired immigrants that are paid with low income working inside of factories with harmful conditions like dangerous machines.
TARRIFS
Southern States opposed the tariff because it put a 38% tax on many manufactured goods imported from Europe angering the southern states since they did not want to pay higher for goods. They also thought that great Britain would stop buying from themselves.
A Tariff is a tax on imported goods. when foreign goods are brought into the country, there will be a tax on it to raise the price of it to help protect the industries in the country.
Northern states supported tariffs because it was created to help protect the Northern states industries. This is because by raising prices of foreign made products, the people will be more likely to buy American made goods. Improving the economy of the factory industries in America especially the Northern states.
Uncle Toms cabin
The Fugitive Slave Act was a law passed in 1850 that said escaped enslaved people had to be returned to their enslavers, even if they made it to a free state.
Uncle Tom's Cabin became very popular and changed many people’s opinions about slavery. After reading the book Northerners supported stopping slavery because they saw how bad it was.
Southerners were upset about the novel because they believed it made the South look bad and showed slavery in a negative way. They felt the book spread false ideas.
Election of 1860
Popular sovereignty means the people living in a territory get to decide to have enslaved people or not.
Abraham Lincoln believed slavery should not spread into new territories but that having enslaved people could stay in the South to not cause any problems.
Mostly white men who were over 21 years old could vote. Women, enslaved people could not though.
Sectionalism

The geographical differences between the Northern states and the Southern states was that Northern states had rocky soil and cold climate while Southern states had fertile soil and long growing season.
New states caused regional division because the war of 1812 made Northern and Southern states have differences like southern states being added to the union meaning more enslaves people. This made northern states worried of the increasing power of states that were allowed these enslaved people.
Sectionalism is when people are more loyal to their region of the country than to the whole nation. Before the Civil War, the North and South had different economies, beliefs, and opinions about slavery, which caused conflict.
States rights

The Fugitive Slave Act upset Northern abolitionists because it required escaped enslaved people to be returned to their enslavers, even if they reached free states.
The 10th Amendment supported states’ rights by saying that powers not given to the federal government belong to the states or the people.
The purpose of the federal government is to run the country, protect citizens, make laws, and keep order.
