Tariffs
Northern states supported tariffs because tariffs protected their factories and industries from foreign competition

(North) Had a colder climate, rocky soil, and many rivers and harbors.
(South) Had a warm climate, long growing seasons, and fertile soil
New states caused regional division because each time a new state was added, people argued over whether it would allow slavery or not.

Sectionalism is strong loyalty to one region of a country over the nation as a whole. In U.S. history, it refers to the growing divide between the North, South, and West before the Civil War, as each region focused on its own economic and political interests.
