Industry vs Agriculture
The climate was important for the southerners because, it was warm and had fertile soil the perfect conditions that they relied on for cash crops their main source of income.
The northern regions did not force anyone to work. But, they did hire immigrants and paid them very low wages but, gave them the ability to quit whenever they wanted.
The Southern region had forced slaves to work on their farms without any kind of pay in harsh conditions and poor treatment.

Slavery
Cash crops are crops that used slave labor and then were sold for a profit without any kind of payment for the slaves.
Enslaved people were discriminated against and forced to work with their rights taken away from them because of their race.
The abolitionist groups extended the churches by trying to take away the right of owning slaves. By writing a congressman to show just how cruel and inhumane the whole system is.

Sectionalism
The geographical differences between the north and the south is that the north has more factories and the south had more cash crops and slaves.

New states caused the regional division by increasing the the need for industries and also expanded slavery.

Election of 1860
During the election of 1860 only 6.9 million were eligible to vote out of a population of 31 million people.
Popular sovereignty is known as the political principle where the government gets its political power from the people.
Lincoln allowed slavery to stay in the southern states but, said that it should not expand beyond that point and stay out of the northern regions.

States Rights

The 10th amendment supports the states rights by stating that any power given to the federal government comes from the people.
The Fugitive Slave Act, upset Northern abolitionists because, it forced them to capture any fugitive slaves even in the free states where they were against slavery.

The Southerners opposed the tariffs because, it made things 38% more expensive for their region.

Uncle Toms Cabin
The results of the popularity of Stowe's novel was that now people were unable to ignore the mistreatment of slaves.
Southerners were upset about this novel because of the fact that they felt it wasn't a clear understanding of how they treated there slaves.
The Fugitive slave act made it so anyone had to capture, any runaway slaves in both North and South regions.
