Tariffs
Definition: A tariff is a goverment-imposed tax made to keep people shopping in a countries boundaries or create pressure for other political parties in other countries.

Why the south didn't: The South disliked these tariffs because it kept them from getting materials that they needed from other countries. It could also stop trade with Britain.

Why the North supported them: The north supported these tariffs because it made people want to buy only from them, since they were the cheaper option.

Definition: Sectionalism is when a group or political party is split into smaller sections (like cliques).

Cash crops are plants or resources that are harvested primarily to be sold for profit, ex; cotton, corn, rice, indigo, tobacco, etc.

Slaves were discriminated against, ways include: No right to vote or leave their owners, and they were also malnourished.

Purpose of the Federal Government: To Govern the Public as a unified nation. To work as a whole, not as individual states.

How the 10th amendment supported states Rights: It states that all powers not given to the Federal Governement are given to the States and the People of them. Federalism is created in this way, and it limits the authority of the Government, while still being strong and stable.

Who could vote: 6.9 Million of the population were able to, and 81% of them (a record high) went out and did so.
Lincolns thoughts on the expansion of slavery: Lincoln thought that the South having slavery was alright, but it should not be expanded into new areas of America.
