The main geographical difference of the north and south is their vastly different land. The south consists of fertile soil and long growing seasons which led to their main source of income and living is from plantations and farms. While the north did not have this which led to factories, industries, and manufacturing,

Southern States were against tariffs because they relied on cheap imports to keep their farms and plantations ongoing
Northern States supported tariffs because it led people to buy more from the northern industries instead of imported goods

State's Rights
The 10th amendment supports the idea of states' rights because it says "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectivly, or to the people."
