Industry V. Agriculture
The northern work force consists of manufacturing industries ran by immigrants who received small pay as their main source of income.
The southern work force consists of plantations ran by slaves full of cash crops as their main source of income.
The climates in the north and the south are very different- the southern climate is warm with fertile soil, and the northern climate is dryer and cooler.

Sectionalism
It caused regional division because the new Southern states held more plantations for cash crops and the North felt like the South had taken over them.
Sectionalism is when 2 areas have different climates, separating their economic production strategies, therefore creating a divide between the areas from their different values
The North had cold, rocky, soil that was better for manufacturing while the South had warm and fertile soil that promoted plantations

Tariffs

Northern states favored tariffs because it protected them and gave thier manufacturing industries support.
Southern states disliked tariffs because they were used to cheap agricultural imports, and they didn't want to have to pay more for the same stuff.

Slavery
Cash Crop Definition: Crops produced in the south grown and sold solely for money, typically farmed by slaves
Enslaved people were discriminated against because they were beaten, had inadequate shelter and food, and did not receive income.

State's Rights
The purpose of the federal government was to unify the confederation of states and fulfill what the Constitution told them to do only.
The tenth amendment supported state's rights becuase it said that the government only had to the power to do what was explicitly said in the Constitution, and the rest was left up to the people, potentially giving them state rights.
The Fugitive Slave Act upset northern abolitionists because they felt that it was wrong to own slaves, and if they escaped then they should be free.

Uncle Tom's Cabin
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850. It
said that it had required any person no matter
the condition, to assist in catching runaway slaves.
The result of Stowe's novel was it had been promoted so well and it made people aware of what had been happening.
The Southerners were upset because she was claimed that she had 'known nothing' because she was from the South and didn't know the life of slaves.

Lincoln's thoughts on the expansion of slavery were that if anything, the areas with enslaved people should stay the same and not grow, and some people in his republican party wanted to ban slavery once and for all.
