Definition of sectionalism
Sectionalism is an excessive, narrow-minded devotion to the interests of a specific region or local area rather than the nation as a whole.
New states cause regional division because each new addition to the Union threatened the delicate balance of power between the North and the South, specifically regarding the expansion of slavery and economic policies.
