How can we respond to the cultural impact of globalisation(chapter 10)
ethnic culture
is often understood in terms of the customs and traditions of different ethnic groups;
is commonly reflected in the language, clothing, art and music of the ethnic group; and
may also encompass the beliefs, values and practices that shape the behaviours, interactions and way of life of members within the ethnic group.
In this way, a shared identity and cohesion are created among members who share the ethnic culture.
Some characteristics
“Pure” culture does not exist.
As a result of globalisation, different cultures have influenced one another.
Ethnic culture may evolve over time. This may be due to people’s actions, choices or influences from other cultures.
Popular and consumer culture
can include aspects like entertainment, food and fashion that relate to people’s behaviour and preferences as consumers;
is a relatively recent creation, largely due to globalisation, as compared to ethnic culture; and
influences people’s behaviour and preferences as consumers.

countries of origin that are more technologically advanced can use digital technology to transmit their entertainment products in digital format and share them via various digital platforms; and
MNCs spread cultural products to more markets for more profits.
Popular and consumer culture can influence people’s way of life and identities due to its spread globally.
Many people continue to embrace it as they find it familiar and relatable.
Some may also adopt the values and beliefs it represents.
It can become part of people’s daily routines, shaping people’s preferences and lifestyles.
Responses to the cultural impacts of globalisation
Varying degrees of acceptance and rejection
Responses of countires
reject cultural globalisation to protect their local culture, values and beliefs;
limit the influence of cultural globalisation that is perceived as a threat to local industries; or
embrace aspects of cultural globalisation that are considered valuable.
responses of individuals
actively consume foreign cultural products, and embrace the ideas, values and beliefs that they promote; or
resist the influences of cultural globalisation or reject foreign cultural products.
Dilution of culture
Influenced by:
spread of popular or consumer culture; and/or
spread of foreign cultures
Local cultures can risk being diluted, or lose their significance or distinctiveness.
As people become more immersed in global cultural products and lifestyles, the practice of local cultures or ethnic traditions may become less widespread.
The rich meanings and ways of life connected with local cultures may be lost over time.
There could also be disconnections among individuals from different generations as they grow up under different cultural influences.
