Reflection 1 – Anxiety and Learning
Learning about anxiety disorders made me realize how fear can develop through experiences and conditioning. The Little Albert experiment showed that fears can be learned and generalized to similar situations over time. This helped me understand why some people develop anxieties that seem irrational to others. I also realized that avoidance behaviors can strengthen anxiety instead of reducing it. This changed how I think about fear and how important healthy coping strategies are.
Reflection 2 – Personality Disorders and Relationships
The discussion of personality disorders showed me how deeply personality affects relationships and emotional functioning. For example, people with borderline personality disorder may struggle with emotional regulation and fear abandonment, which can create unstable relationships. I realized that many behaviors that seem confusing or extreme may be connected to underlying emotional difficulties. This made me more understanding of how mental health conditions influence behavior and relationships. It also showed me the importance of empathy and treatment.
Reflection 3 – Mental Health and Treatment
Learning about therapy and treatment changed how I think about mental health disorders. Before this chapter, I assumed disorders like anxiety or personality disorders were mostly permanent and impossible to improve. However, exposure therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy showed that treatment can help people manage symptoms and build healthier coping strategies. This made me realize that recovery is possible even when symptoms are severe. It also helped me understand the importance of psychological support and long-term treatment.
