- - - - submission to authority - based on a sample of 237 members of a New York High School senior year, they examined the relationship between grades + personality.
        - low grades --> creativity, aggressiveness + independence (penalised by school)
        - high grades - disciplined, subordinate, perseverance, consistency, dependability + punctuality (rewarded by school)
        the education system prepares students for the 'the hierarchical division of labour in the work place (eg. teacher --> boss/manager)
      - external rewards - little control over work leads to lack of intrinsic (direct) satisfaction from it. There is little opportunity to express themselves and find fulfilment at school. They are motivated by the external (extrinsic) rewards of exam success + employment. This is mirrored in the world of work, with the external reward of wages, otherwise it leads to alienation.
      - legitimating inequality - education achieves this by creating the belief that schools provide the opportunity for fair and open competition. It is based on meritocracy. However, Bowles + Gintis reject the idea that rewards are based on meritocracy and claim instead that educational and occupational attainment are related to family background, not talent.
