chapter 53 & 54
-
Principle of competitive exclusion: only one species for niche. if they share a niche one must change, or die.
-
-
-
-
-
a life history is how an animal, lives, interacts with its environment, and dies. basically a Niche.
-
-
R strategist: has an many offspring as possible, few making it to adulthood. Type three survivorship.
K strategist: fewer offspring birthed but a higher survival rate to adulthood. Type one survivorship.
types of defenses.
-
chemical: when animal uses things like acid, poison, or other irritants for defense
-
-
population is multiple individuals of the same species in the same area that can produce viable offspring.
-
-
Density dependent factors: the more organisms are crowded together in one area the more these are effected: Space, food, water, conflict, disease and waste.
-
Trophic structure: this is the transfer of energy between levels of organisms, aka the food chain.
Biomass: Primary producers produce biomass from the sun, then primary consumers eat that biomass and so on.
the food chain does not represent reality but instead the energy transfer of an ecosystem. with only 10% being transferred per level.
the food web is more realistic by showing which organisms interact with who, and what. but it does not show trophic levels.
