Identity
Fluidity In Identity
Minimal Selves
Hall shows us that identity is ever changing. We see throughout the reading that your identity can change as your experiences do. Initially, Hall shows how his family displays themselves as Englishman and how the education system shows such to be a place where the English culture is seen in a way with pride despite his family being Jamaican.

Forster demonstrates in The Life to Come how identity can be affected by both internal and external factors.
Internal Factors: Throughout The Life to Come internal factors that affect Paul's identity are his own doubts and denial that he has experienced intimate moments with someone of the same sex.
-
External Factors: Throughout The Life to Come external factors that affect Paul's identity include his feelings on his own sexuality include his Christian doctrine he is being taught to share. Such beliefs are against homosexuality and teach that man and woman should be together.
Minimal Selves
With Hall's experience we see his disappointment in England upon finally visiting what was almost seen as a Utopian society. This comes from recognizing that his identity is not only changing within his own life, but that identity can change based on how others view him.
Repression
The Life to Come Forster shows how sexuality can be repressed based on social norms and one's own thoughts about oneself. Paul surpresses his desires and views them as sinful after acting on them.
Language
In The Life to Come Forester shows how language effects understandings in literature. In this scenario, Vitobai and Paul have miscommunications due to cultural differences including language.
