Douglas' concept of "out of place" is, ironically, an odd concept. Going so far as to compare eating lunch or breakfast in the bathroom, even if fully sanitary, as "out of expectation", which it is to us, but argues that it shouldn't be. Doing such an action makes us uncomfortable. Douglas than applies this concept onto people, stating that when we aren't conforming to traditional societal expectations, we are then out of place and "morally inferior" to which we then can internalize and affect our behavior further...or not, and we can continue living, proud of who we are.
