PERSEPOLIS
3 important moments
The "Prophet" Childhood
Before the revolution is fully felt, Marji has a deep, innocent relationship with God. She wants to be a prophet to fix social classes (like her maid not being able to eat with them) and to ensure old people don't suffer. This shows her natural heart for justice before politics turns her world into a place of war

The World of the text
A Changing Society
The text starts with showing Iran moving from a modern country to a strict religious one (1979 rev). Marji lives in a "split" world: at home, she reads books and listens to music, but outside, she must hide her personality to stay safe. (We saw earlier the backlash she got for wanting to be a prophet)
The Power of Religion
Faith is used by the government to control how people act, dress, and think

My interpretation
This text shows a world where the government tries to own your soul and your body. It made me as a reader feel rebellious and sad. It teaches us that even when a government/someone in authority takes away your rights, they cannot take away your ability to think for yourself
