UNIT 5: PESERVATION & CONSERVATION
Why do some animals become extinct?
Hunting and overfishing – Humans hunt or catch animals too much, causing their numbers to decrease.
Climate change – Changes in temperature and weather make it difficult for animals to survive.
Pollution – Dirty water, air, and land can harm animals and their habitats
Disease – Some diseases spread quickly and kill many animals
Natural disasters – Floods, fires, earthquakes, and droughts can destroy animal populations.
Competition from other animals – Some animals cannot compete for food and shelter.
Habitat loss – Forests, rivers, and other habitats are destroyed, so animals lose their homes and food
How can humans help to protect animals from extinction?
Protecting habitats – Preserve forests, rivers, oceans, and other natural environments where animals live.
Stopping illegal hunting – Enforce laws against poaching and overhunting
Reducing pollution – Keep the environment clean by reducing waste and pollution.
Planting more trees – Trees provide food and shelter for many animals.
Creating wildlife reserves and national parks – Safe places help animals live and reproduce.
Saving endangered animals – Breeding and conservation programs can increase animal populations.
Using natural resources wisely – Avoid destroying nature through excessive logging, fishing, or land clearing.
Educating people – Teach others about the importance of protecting animals and nature.
Why is preservation and conservation important for endangered animals?
Maintain biodiversity – Every animal plays an important role in the ecosystem. Protecting animals keeps nature balanced.
Protect food chains – If one animal disappears, it can affect other plants and animals in the food chain.
Preserve natural resources – Healthy ecosystems provide clean air, water, food, and medicine for humans and animals.
Prevent extinction – Conservation programs help increase the population of endangered animals
Maintain ecological balance – Animals help in pollination, seed dispersal, and controlling pests.
Protect future generations – Future generations can learn about and enjoy these animals.
What does the term “extinct animal” mean?
An extinct animal is an animal that no longer exists because all of its kind have died out.
