Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit: “I still don’t think of God as my betrayer. The servants of God, yes, but servants by their very nature betray” (170)
Jeanette's familial relationships are complicated to put it lightly, but the way she processes these complexities is showcased well in this line. When talking about her connection to God, which directly ties with her relationship to her mother, she states that she feels no wrongdoing on God’s part, but rather the servants of God. That being said, she still gives a sympathetic attitude towards the so-called servants of God. Religion was a large part of Jeanette’s life through her mothers devotion, and she makes the choice not to reject this aspect of her completely. Instead, she takes what she wants from the situation instead of focusing on what she hates.
