acute bleed- rapid sever blood loss (like a haemorrage) blood pressure falls, haemodilution over time

no changes in blood test
after 24 hrs ==> decreased Hb, HCT, WBC, platelets. increased EPO
polcytheaemia- increase in Hb levels, RBC count, HCT and blood viscosity
ruddy appearance, cynosis, headaches, blurred vision, hypertension

secondary- increased EPO, altitude, smoking, renal carcinoma
venesection (bleeding), radioactive phosphorus (myelosuppression with cytotoxic agents)
chronic bleed- long-term e.g. gastric bleeding, excessive menses
decreased Hb, HCT, MCV, iron stored 0, increase EPO + reticulocytes
Crohn's disease- chronic inflammatory bowel disease affects lining of digestive tract malabsorption of B12, folate + iron
