Chapters 53&54
-
Chapter 53.1- Biotic and abiotic factors affect poplulation density, dispersion, and demographics
-
-
-
-
-
Survivorship Curves- graphs that show the proportion of individuals survivng at each age in a population
Demography- the study of how populations change in size, structure, and distribution over time
Chapter 53.2 The exponential model describes population growth in an idealized, unlimited environment
Exponential growth- when a population increases rapidly at a constant rate producing a J-shaped curve
-
-
-
Growth starts fast like exponential, then slows as population approaches K eventually stopping when N=K
Chapter 53.3- The logistic model describes how a population grows more slowly as it near its carrying capacity
Logistic population growth- population grows quickly at first, then slows and levels off due to limited resources
-
Chapter 54.1- Interactions between species ccan help, harm, or have no effect on the individuals involved
Interspecifc interactions- affect the survival and reproduction of the individuals that engage in them
Competitive exclusion- states two species whose members compete for the same resource cannot coexist permanently in the same place
-
-
Ecological niche- the specific set of biotic and abiotic resources that an organism uses in it's environment
-
-
Commensalism- member of one species benefit, while members of another species are not affected
