Insects
Subtopic- How Some insects harm us
Activity - Show how different insect bite, sting or spread desease (this will be done in picture form with flash cards.(Twinkl, 2023)
Scientific Concept - learners will develop an understanding between living things, by recognising how insects can affect humans and animals through their bites and stings which can be a form of transmitting disease. (Van heerden,2022).
Scientific Process Skill - Communication, Observation, Comparing
Subtopic - Observing And Drawing an Insect
Scientific Concepts - Learners will observe and record skills by studying living insects and will represent Findings visually. (Valovicova et all, 2019)
Scientific Process Skills - Communicating, Observing.
Activity - Making use of magnifying glasses to observe and insect, learners will then draw it and label it.
Subtopic - Types of Insects
Scientific Concept - learners will be able to recognise the different variety amongst insects and they will be able to organise them into the different categories.
Scientific Process Skills - Comparing, Communicating, Classifying, observing.
Activity - Sort different insects into group based on differences and similarities.
Subtopic -Life Cycle Of Insects
Scientific Process Skills - Classifying, Communicating, Observing.
Activity - Create paper wheel showing the different stages of a butterflies development (Twinkle, 2023)
Scientific Concepts - Learners wil learn about change and growth how insects develop and grow in stages they will understand the process of metamorphosis from egg, larva, pupa, adult (Van Heerden,2022)
Subtopic - Characteristics of an Insect
Scientific Process Skills - observing Classifying, measuring.
Activity - Label insect body parts, count the legs and measure the antennae. (Twinkl, 2023)
Scientific Concepts - Learners will be able to differentiate and name the structure and functions of the different parts that makes up an insect (Van Heerden,2022).
Subtopic - How Insects Help us
Scientific Process Skill - Experimenting, Observing, Communicating.
Activity-outside activity watching bees pollinate flowers and have discussions on how insects help plants grow and how they make honey that people consume.
Scientific Concepts - Learners will show an understanding of relationships between people and insects how they play a role in pollination, food production and decomposition. (Van Heerden, 2022).
Subtopic - Insect Habitats
Scientific Process Skills - Observing, Comparing , Communicating
Build a bug hotel and observe which bugs will be attracted to it allow learners to use recycled materials to create a ant hill.
Scientific Concepts - Learners will recognise that insects makes different types of habitats to suite their survival needs (Van Heerden, 2022)
