Biodiversity is important for keeping ecosystems stable
Biodiversity is important for keeping ecosystems stable.
In more biodiverse ecosystems, there are more species.
That means that organisms have more options for food and shelter.
For example, foxes in a biodiverse forest can eat lots of different animals, such as rabbits, birds, frogs, mice and worms.
If the population of rabbits falls, foxes can still eat the other animals.
In a less biodiverse ecosystem, though, there are fewer species.
For example, the foxes might only have rabbits and frogs for food.
If the population of rabbits falls, the foxes will become more dependent on the frogs for food.
If the frogs disappear too, then the population of foxes might have nothing to eat.
In less biodiverse ecosystems, species can be more reliant on each other and this makes them vulnerable.
Different programmes aim to reduce the negative effects of humans
Lots of people are now making an effort to protect biodiversity.
They’re doing this through different types of programmes.
For example, breeding programmes help to increase the numbers of endangered species.
Other types of programmes aim to protect and regenerate rare habitats, e.g. by making them into conservation areas.
There are also efforts to encourage farmers to add hedgerows and field margins to their crop fields.
These are important habitats for lots of species that can't otherwise survive in fields of just a single crop.
Some governments are also trying to reduce deforestation and carbon dioxide emissions.
Lots of people also recycle now rather than dumping their waste in landfill.
Human activity has reduced Earth’s biodiversity
Humans need other species to survive.
We use other species for food, raw materials, fuels, and natural medicines.
However, many human activities are reducing the number of species on Earth.
These human activities include waste production, deforestation and burning fossil fuels.
This is harmful to humans and to many different ecosystems.
Scientists and concerned citizens are now trying to reduce our negative effects on biodiversity.
However, this has only really started in the last few decades.
Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth
Biodiversity is the variety of all species on Earth or within an ecosystem.
An ecosystem with high biodiversity has lots of different species in it.
For example, rainforests have high biodiversity.
An ecosystem with low biodiversity doesn’t have lots of different species in it.
For example, deserts have low biodiversity.
