      - but the image is closely modelled on a contemporary Persian coin-type: the image of the Semitic god Ba'al of Tarsus
      - it appears, for example, on the coins minted by the Persian satrap named Mazaeus in Cilicia
      - so Alexander chose an image that would carry different connotations for two different audiences: continuity with Persian rule for his new subjects, and traditional Hellenic piety for his own army
