Characteristics of an insect
Three body parts
Head: Brains, eyes and antennae. Smelling and feeling.
Thorax: middle section. Wings, some have 2 wings, some do not have. Three pairs of legs, 6 in total.
Abdomen: organs, digestion, excretion and reproduction Insects breath through tiny holes called spiracles. .
Different types of insects
Beetles: Hard outer wings, oval shape and strong bodies.
Ants and Bees: 2 pair of wings, narrow waste, and known social insects.
Dragonflies: 2 pairs of transparent wings, large eyes. Lives near water.
Flies: One pair of wings. Spread disease and are found everywhere.
Observing and drawing an insect. (Activity)
Observe: Body Parts, how it moves.
Drawing: Use circles or ovals to form the body.
Label: Head, legs, thorax and abdomen
How some insects harm us.
Spreading diseases: Malaria and infections.
Damaging crops: Economic loss and food shortatge.
Destroying homes: Eats clothes and funiture.
Bee sting: Discomfort, itchiness and pain.
How insects help us
Soil improvement.
Produce Materials: Honey from bees and Beeswax from candles.
Decomposition: Some insects break down dead plants.
Pollunation of plants: Plants produce seeds, fruits and vegetables.
