Insects
How insects help us
-
Silkworms create silk, which can be used to create fabric for clothes.
Lady bugs feast on plant - damaging pests, keeping our gardens safe.
-
Bees produce honey, that is a natural remedy for coughs and sore throats.

Different insects - such as fly, mosquito, ant and beetle
Activity: The class will do a sorting activity, involving rubber insects. They will get a paper with the question: Can it fly? There will be a "yes" column on the left and a "no" column on the right. Each child must place the insect on the side where they think the insect fits best.
Flies taste with their feet.
Only female mosquitoes bite.
Some ants can live up to 30 years.
Beetles cannot see very well, they communicate through pheromones, sounds or vibrations.
Life cycle
Activity: Life cycle of a butterfly
The class will do a life cycle activity of a butterfly. Each child will get a paper plate, 3 different types of macaroni pieces and some colouring paper to cut out leaf - like parts, a branch, a butterfly and all the different stages of forming into a butterfly. The paperplate will be divided into 4 equal parts with a black khoki line. In each part must be another cycle of the butterfly's process.
Butterflies undergo a process called "metamorphosis". It all starts with a female butterfly that lays her eggs on plants.
Caterpillars grow in these eggs. Depending on the species, the egg shape and texture can vary. Time it takes to hatch, also vary.
The 2nd stage is the caterpillar that leaves the egg. They eat a lot. They shed their skin 4 to 5 times as they grow.
The 3rd stage is when the caterpillar forms itself into a "pupa" or chrysalis. This usually happens in a safe place of plants. It lasts a few weeks, and at the end a butterfly forms.
Stage 4: the butterfly still has soft, wet wings. The wings must first dry and get hemolymph into them before it is strong enough to fly. Once the wings are strong, the butterfly takes off and find flowers to feed on.

Diet
Most insects feed on plants, like the leaves, stem and flowers. These are herbivorous insects.
Frugivores insects eat fruit. They often feed on very ripe or decaying fruit.
Carnivorous insects eat other insects, blood and some eat carrion. Dragonflies eat other insects such as butterflies.
Activity: Insect food sorting. I will provide images or samples of different insect foods. (leaves, other insects, nectar and pictures of fruits) I will ask students to group them by diet type. (Herbivore, carnivore, decomposer)
