Homeostasis
Osmoregulation & Excretion
Osmoregulation
Controlled by: Diffusion & Osmosis
Environments
Saltwater- gain salt, lose water
Freshwater- gain water, lose salt
Balance H20 & solute concentration
Types of Osmoregulators
Osmoconformers- external conditions. Ex: marine invertebrates
Osmoregulators- actively regulate internal conditions. Ex: mammals & fish
Nitrogenous Waste
Ammonia- very toxic & high amount of H2O needed. Ex: fish
Urea- moderate toxicity. Average amount of H2O. Ex: mammals
Uric Acid- low toxicity. Little water needed. Ex: birds
Horomone Control
ADH- increase water reabsorption
RAAS- regulate blood pressure & volume
Horomones & Endocrine System
Types of Horomones
Lipid-Soluble
Pass through membrane
Bind to intracellular receptors
Steroids
Affect gene expression
Water-Soluble
Use signal transduction pathways
Bind to cell surface receptors
Peptides & Proteins
Horomones
Travel through bloodstream
Bind to specific receptors
Blood Glucose Regulation
Insulin- lowers glucose
Glucagon- raises glucose
Feedback Mechanism
Negative Feedback loop- maintains stability
