Law vs Morality
-
Natural Law Theory
Natural law theory is the idea that there are higher moral principles that are more important than laws created by governments. If a law is unjust, people have the right to disobey it. This connects directly to Thoreau’s argument, since he supports John Brown even though Brown broke the law. It also applies to Douglass, who defends resistance against slavery. In our class, this concept helps explain why people sometimes go against the legal system.

Violence and Power

Lynching
Lynching was a form of racial violence used to intimidate and control Black people. It often happened without punishment, showing that the justice system was unequal. This connects directly to Wells’s writing, which exposes the truth behind these acts. It also shows how violence was used outside the law to maintain power. In our class, it helps explain how injustice continued even after slavery ended.
