Lung Anatomy and Physiology
Regulation of pH (Regulación del pH) – “What?”
• Maintains acid-base balance in blood
How / Why?
• CO₂ affects blood acidity
• Lungs remove excess CO₂ through exhalation
• More CO₂ = more acidic blood
• Faster breathing → reduces acidity
Protection (Protección del sistema respiratorio) – “What?”
• Prevents harmful substances from entering lungs
How / Why?
• Nasal hairs filter large particles
• Mucus traps dust and bacteria
• Cilia move mucus out of lungs
• Coughing and sneezing remove irritants
. Ventilation (Ventilación pulmonar) – “What?”
• Movement of air in and out of lungs
How / Why?
• Controlled by the diaphragm and intercostal muscles
• Inhalation: diaphragm contracts → lungs expand
• Exhalation: diaphragm relaxes → lungs contract
• Pressure changes allow air to flow
Gas Exchange (Intercambio de gases) – “What?”
• Exchange of oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂)
How / Why?
• Occurs in the alveoli
• Oxygen passes into blood through diffusion
• Carbon dioxide leaves blood into lungs
• Alveoli have thin walls → faster exchange
• Surrounded by capillaries
