4 Types of childhood:
Child soldier:
-In South Sudan, 19,000 children who were soldiers died. They were abducted, and if they didn't fight they would die. They had funerals with no bodies as they couldn't find them.
Child in poverty:
-Rely on food banks and baby benefits, parents will only have 1 meal to let their children have more food, 34% of children live in poverty, 1.5m under 5yrs live in poverty (North east England 2nd highest rate).
Western children:
-Boys had to be tough and ready to fight, girls had to be pretty, capitalist society, children were consumers e.g. toys, books etc, medical problems on the rise e.g. AHDH, diabetes
Victorian children:
-Children were beaten and sold as parents couldn't afford them, lots got diseases from factories, they were only valued depending on the work they could do, 12-16hr work, mining had death threats
(most sociologists agree that the process of industrialisation underlies many changes for childhood. Higher standards of living= lower infant mortality rate.)
