Electricity can be obtained from non-renewable sources, like fossil fuels
(charcoal, oil, natural gas) and uranium, or renewable sources, like wind,
hydro, and solar power. The first ones produce the following
environmental impact:
Global warming
Radioactive residuals
Acid rain
Depletion of sources
As limited resources, the exploitation of fossil
fuels is leading to their depletion.
Thermal power plants release sulfur and nitrogen oxides
into the atmosphere, which, when mixed with rainwater, cause
severe pollution in nearby forests
Waste from nuclear power plants remains
highly radioactive for thousands of years, even though it is treated
and sorted in secure facilities.
When fossil fuels are burned to generate
electricity, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, thereby
raising the planet's temperature due to the increased greenhouse
effect.
