why year 5
A career development program is not about choosing jobs early. In primary school, its purpose is to:
Build career awareness
Develop learning–career connections
Expand students’ sense of possible futures
Counter inequity and early stereotype formation
Science naturally links to:
Environmental care
Health and wellbeing
Technology and innovation
Problem-solving for community challenges
1. Why would a Career Development professional design a Science-based program?
Science is a powerful vehicle for this because it:
a) Connects learning to real-world futures
A CED professional uses Science to help students answer:
“Why does this learning matter beyond school?”
A Science program would not satisfy the criterion if:
Indigenous or cultural perspectives are:
A single lesson
A worksheet
A “fun fact” inserted after the core content
Western scientific methods are treated as the only legitimate way of knowing
All students must demonstrate learning through:
Written reports only
Individual tasks
Academic English without scaffolds
Community knowledge is referenced but not integrated into assessment or pedagogy
Your Science program does satisfy the criteria when it:
Questions whose knowledge is centred as “science”
Restructures learning experiences to be more equitable
Values multiple ways of observing, explaining, and communicating
Makes changes to content, pedagogy, assessment, resources, and engagement — not just one of them
When a Science program does meet the criteria
