Writers' visions shifted primarily due to the trauma and devastation of World War I. Before the war, many held a Victorian belief in progress, reason, and a bright future.
- The unprecedented scale of death caused many to lose faith in traditional values, religion, and the idea that "civilization" was naturally improving.
- The "Lost Generation" of writers began to view the present as fragmented and the future as uncertain or bleak, leading to the rise of Modernism.
- Influenced by Freud, writers shifted their focus from objective reality to the messy, irrational inner workings of the human mind.
Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy was often misinterpreted or "cherry-picked" by politicians to justify their own agendas, particularly in the early 20th century:
- Politicians distorted this idea of an individual who creates their own values into a justification for a "master race" or a supreme leader who is above conventional morality.
- This concept was used to justify nationalism and expansionism, suggesting that strong nations or leaders have a natural right to dominate others to assert their greatness.
- By arguing that "God is dead" and that Christian morality was a "slave morality," Nietzsche provided a framework for leaders to reject democratic or humanitarian constraints in favor of raw political strength and heroic action.
