The universities were founded during the time period known as Gothic. They are modern education institutions that flourish everywhere in Europe. The name comes from Universitas (UNIVERSAL in latin), because all the knowledge of the time was taught at them.
University is very important because, before them, all the knowledge belonged to the church (monasteries). In addition, education was only addressed to form the clergy. Now the university will give formation to doctors, lawyers, etc...
