COURSE DESIGN
Components
.
.
Conceptualizing content
Formulating goals and objectives
Richards (2001): broad aims / specific outcomes
Developing materials
.
Designing an assessment plan
.
Assessing needs
objectives emerge from needs analysis (Graves 2000)
.
Verbs instead of nouns
it is not a fixed linear process
.
goals and objectives are dynamic and can be reformulated during the course design process. (Graves 2000)
.
defining the context
.
Building a house
You need enough information to make decisions
what to teach and how
Resources and constraints
Problematizing the context
Define what to focus on in planning the course
Identifying challenges
objectives shaped by context (Graves 2000)
Physical setting
People
Nature of course or institution
Environment analysis (Macalister)
A constraint can bee positive in curriculum design
ensures that the course will be usable
Factors
Constraints
The constraint of learner motivation
The constraint of time
The constraint of teacher availability
Steps
1) Think and decide on the environment factors that may affeect the course.
2) Choose the most important ones. Rank them
3) Decide what info. you need to fully take account of the factor.
4) Consider the effect of each factor on the design of th course.
5) Go through steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 again.
Time
Foundations
.
Teachers' beliefs
Teachers' identity (Bigelow and Ennaser)
Forest or the human system metaphor
T at the centre (Graves, K)
system centered (Macallister, J.)
