Food rationing to control the amount that everyone gets

Causes
Workers were unhappy with working conditions and pay
Trade Unions were infiltrated by communists who led them to strike
Solution
Laws were passed to control Unions - e.g. needs to be registered with the government
Problem was unsolved and it worsened into riots
Political awakening
Cause
After WWII, the people started to reject their colonial masters who were defeated. In many of the SEAsian states the countries were pushing for a democratic/communist government run by the locals. Singapore was no exception.
Solution
Allow for gradual participation of the locals. E.g. Limited voting and elections.
Economic difficulties
Causes
Economy was disrupted due to the destruction of the war
Solution
Repaired ports and restore it as a trading center - increase in trade and commercial activities and people get jobs
There was also an increase of tin and rubber trade
