Divisions of the nervous system
Nervous system
Central
Peripheral
Autonomic
Sympathetic
Asympathetic
Somatic
Central nervous system - brain and spinal chord
Reflex arc
Sensory neurons detect stimulus
Sends the messages to the CNS
Relay neuron then transfers that information to the motor neuron
Relay neuron carries the message that there is pain and gives instruction for the muscle to move
Spinal chord transmits messages to and from the brain to the PNS
Peripheral
Autonomic
transmits info to and from internal organs to sustain life processes
Controls involuntary movements like breathing and heartbeats.
Sympathetic branch - switch on (activates arousal and energy)
Asympathetic branch - switch off (conserves and stores resources)
Differences: The ANS is unconscious, and the SNS is conscious. The SNS has sensory and motor neurons, whereas the ANS uses only motor neurons. The ANS controls internal organs and glands, whereas the SNS controls skeletal muscle movement
Somatic
transmits info to and from senses and to and from CNS
Sensory (afferent) pathways - transmit and receive information from the senses such as visual information rom the eyes and auditory information from the ears to brian
Motor (efferent) pathways - direct voluntary movement of skeletal muscles and orchestrate all of our movement from brian
