Beginnings - 17th to 18th Century: The first scholarly periodicals, such as Philosophical Transactions and Journal des Sçavans, first appeared in Europe in the 1660s. Lighter fare, such as notable pieces in The Tatler (1709) and The Spectator (1711), was introduced in the 18th century.
Specialisation and Media Rise - 18th to 19th Century: In 1741, the first American magazines were published, including Benjamin Franklin’s. Women’s magazines started to take off, most notably The Ladies Magazine (1770), which popularised fashion plates.
Mass Circulation & Advertising - Late 19th to Early 20th Century: In the United States, mass circulation and reasonably priced journals were first introduced in the 1830s. By 1900, advertising had become essential, and magazines such as Munsey Magazine were lowering their costs to boost their readership.
The Age of Photography - Early 20th Century and Modern Challenges - 21st Century: The 20th century was dominated by image and news publications such as Newsweek and Time. The industry has moved online, with many titles recreating themselves through digital forms, while print magazines have experienced a decrease due to declining advertising revenues.
