The Light Reactions
The Nature of Sunlight
light is a form of electromagnetic energy, which travels in rhythmic waves
-
-
-
Photosynthetic Pigments
-
different pigments absorb different wavelengths, and the wavelengths absorbed disappear
-
-
-
-
-
-
the slight structural difference between chlorophyll a and b results in the two having different absorption spectrums
scientists recently discovered chlorophyll d and chlorophyll f, which absorb higher wavelengths of light
-
A Photosystem
-
reaction-center complex
organized assoc. of proteins holding a special pair of chlorophyll a molecules and a primary electron acceptor
-
-
the solar-powered transfer of an electron from chlorophyll a to the primary electron acceptor is the 1st step of the light reactions
-
Linear Electron Flow
electron flow is either cyclic or linear during the light reactions; the latter is the primary pathway
-
8 steps
2) an excited electron from P680 is transferred to the primary electron acceptor (oxidized form is known as P680⁺)
3) enzyme catalyzes the split of H₂O into 2 electrons, 2 H⁺, and an oxygen atom
electrons transferred to P680⁺, reducing it back to P680
H⁺ released into thylakoid space; O₂ is formed from oxygen atoms generated from the splitting of H₂O molecules
1) a photon hits a pigment in a light-harvesting complex of PSII, and its energy is passed among pigment molecules until it excites P680
4) electrons are passed from the primary electron acceptor of PSII down an ETC to PSI via redox reactions
the ETC includes plastoquinone (Pq), a cytochrome complex, and the protein plastocyanin
energy released is used to pump H⁺ into thylakoid space, creating a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane
-
6) In PSI, transferred light energy excites P700, which loses an electron to the primary electron acceptor
-
7) electrons are passed from the primary electron acceptor of PSI down a 2nd ETC to the protein ferredoxin (Fd)
-
Cyclic Electron Flow
in cyclic electron flow, electrons cycle back from ferredoxin to the cytochrome complex instead of being transferred to NADP⁺
-
-
does not produce NADPH or oxygen, but does produce ATP
for organisms with a single photosystem, cyclic flow is the only way to generate ATP during photosynthesis
-
chloroplasts are solar powered chemical factories whose thylakoids transform light energy into chemical energy
The Calvin Cycle
The Calvin Cycle takes place in the stroma; it is anabolic, building sugar from smaller molecules and consuming energy
-
for a net synthesis of 1 G3P molecule, the cycle must take place 3 times (fixing one CO₂ molecule per cycle for a total of 3 CO₂)
