Phobias
Phobias are seen as an exaggerated response to a frightening stimuli in your environment. Phobias are thought to occur in roughly 10% of the population
Characteristics
Cognitive: Recognition of exaggerated anxiety - phobics recognise that their phobia
Behavioural: avoidant behaviour, disruption of functioning
Emotional: persistent, excessive fear, fear from exposed objects
Depression
'Affective' disorder that affects more females than males, cyclical and episodic disorder
Characteristics:
Cognitive: Delusions, reduced concentration, thoughts of death
Behavioural: loss of energy, social impairment, weight changes, sleeping issues
Emotional: loss of enthusiasm, constant low mood, worthlessness
OCD
Characteristics (obsessions):
Cognitive: recurrent thought patterns, self-generated recognition, realisation of inappropriate
Behavioural: debilitation in functioning, social impairment
Emotional: extreme anxiety, fear of loss of identity
Characteristics (compulsions):
Cognitive: Uncontrollable urges, realisation of inappropriateness
Behavioural: repetitive, hindering of everyday functioning, social impairment
Emotional: distress, worry of being caught carrying out unacceptable behaviour
