Reproductive System
Jade Mellin - Period 3
Major Functions of the Reproductive System
Male:
Produce sperm
Deliver sperm to female
Produce testosterone
Female:
Produce eggs (ova)
Site of fertilization
Support development of embryo/fetus
Childbirth
Produce estrogen & progesterone
Anatomy of Male Reproductive Structures
Testes → produce sperm & testosterone
Scrotum → temperature control
Epididymis → sperm maturation
Vas deferens → transports sperm
Seminal vesicles → add fluid (energy for sperm)
Prostate gland → adds alkaline fluid
Urethra → passageway
Penis → delivers sperm
Anatomy of Female Reproductive Structures
Ovaries → produce eggs & hormones
Fallopian tubes → site of fertilization
Uterus → houses fetus
Endometrium → lining that thickens/sheds
Cervix → opening to uterus
Vagina → birth canal
Hormones of the Reproductive System
Male:
Testosterone → sperm production, male traits
Female:
Estrogen → follicle development, female traits
Progesterone → maintains uterine lining
Both:
FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone) → gamete production
LH (Luteinizing hormone) → triggers ovulation/testosterone
Events of the Female Hormonal Cycles
Ovarian Cycle:
Follicular phase → follicle develops
Ovulation → egg released
Luteal phase → corpus luteum forms
Uterine (Menstrual) Cycle:
Menstrual phase → shedding lining
Proliferative phase → lining rebuilds
Secretory phase → lining thickens
Disorders & STIs
Chlamydia → bacterial STI; often no symptoms; can cause infertility
Gonorrhea → bacterial STI; affects reproductive tract; treatable
Syphilis → bacterial STI; progresses in stages; serious if untreated
Genital Herpes → viral STI; causes painful sores; no cure
HPV (Genital Warts) → viral STI; causes warts; linked to cancer
HIV/AIDS → attacks immune system; no cure but treatable
Hepatitis (B) → viral infection; affects liver
Trichomoniasis → parasitic STI; causes irritation/discharge
PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) → infection of female organs; can cause infertility
Endometriosis → uterine lining grows outside uterus; causes pain
PCOS → hormone disorder; affects ovulation
Contraceptives
Barrier
External condom → blocks sperm from entering female
Internal condom → worn inside vagina; blocks sperm
Diaphragm → covers cervix to stop sperm
Hormonal
Pill → prevents ovulation using hormones
Injectables → long-lasting hormones stop ovulation
Intrauterine
IUD → device in uterus; prevents fertilization
Behavioral
Fertility awareness → avoid fertile days
Withdrawal → removes sperm before release
Surgical
Female sterilization → blocks fallopian tubes
Male sterilization → cuts vas deferens
