On a map:
Contour lines are close together
Steep and Gentle Slopes
Steep Slope
A steep slope means the land rises very quickly.
Example: cliffs or mountains.
Easy way to remember:
Close lines = Steep
Far lines = Gentle
On a map:
Contour lines are far apart
Gentle Slope
A gentle slope rises slowly.
Example: rolling hills or plains.
On a contour map:
The contour lines form a V shape.
Important rule:
The V points upstream (toward higher ground).
River Valleys
A river valley is a low area where a river flows.
So if you see a V shape, the river flows in the opposite direction of the V.
Difference from valleys:
Valley V = points upstream
Spur V = points downhill
On a contour map:
The contour lines form a U or V shape pointing downhill.
Spurs
A spur is a ridge of high land that sticks out from a mountain or hill.
