Forgetting (Ch8)
a) don't have the right cue for retrieval
b) association between cue and target memory is lost
c) target memory itself is lost
Occlusion -
Stronger link from a cue to some undesired memory than to the target, therefore cue always calls up the undesired memory
Makes it seem that the memory is hidden/covered by another memory
E.g., harder to remember the correct current year during Jan, before the new target for the cue of "current year" (2026) is stronger than the old target (2025)
Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon
Effect in which you are certain you know the concept but cannot think of a proper term for it
Decay
Hypothesis about forgetting results (at least in part) from the spontaneous decomposition of memories over time
-> link between cue and target memory spontaneously decays over time
Not time that causing the decay per se, but some processes behind it (mental rusting)
Repression: active forgetting of an episode for the sake of self-protection (usually traumatic memories)
Case study of WB: forgetting that she even retrieved it
-> shows that even if a person says they have completely forgotten an event -> might not be true
Rarity of repressed trauma -> victims do remember their traumas, there's not a repressed memory to recover, but a real danger of creating a false traumatic memory

Spontaneous recovery
The sudden uncovering of a memory that was believed to be forgotten
- Can be retrieved again w/ the right cues
Memory and hypnosis
- Did NOTHIGG to improve memory
Direct Brain Stimulation
- Experiment: using electric currents to stimulate different parts of the brain
- Ps reported different memories
- PROBLEMS
+few patient successfully retrieved memories
+those who reported it reported that it felt more than a memory -> possibly created pictures in the person's consciousness but not memories
+likely constructions: experiences that feel like fr memories but might be combination of real memory and other info (such as what the person believes prob happened)
Permastore
- Enough practice makes memory immune to forgetting
- Permastore:hypothetical state of memory from which info is not lost
Spanish experiment
- Knowledge of Spanish retrievable 50 years later after last encoded/rehearsed -> permastore
- The longer Ps had studied Spanish, the more spanish they had in Permastore
3 general ways:
- Cues may be ineffective because they're intepreted differently than they were at encoding
- associative links between cues and targets may be lost due to decay or unlearning;; or a link maybe ineffective because the cue also leads to another memory via a stronger associative link
unlearning:. (practicing a new association between a cue and a target memory weakens the associative link between the cue and another memory)
- repression: can occur, but not a common cause
Attention (Ch4)
Attention: continued cognitive processing
- selective: selects sum stimuli for further cog processing while leaving some other unattended
- however those unattended stimuli still get some processing: basic sensory characteristics (early filter) and based on their meaning (late filter)

In what ways is attention a limited resource?
2 assumptions
- Attention can be divided and distributed to more than 1 task at a time
- W/ sufficient practice, a task will require fewer attentional resource
Divided attention
Test by: Dual task paradigm
To make sure we are studying attention being divided and not being switched rapidly between tasks -> discrete task
Response to stimulus interval:period of time after participant has responded but before the next stimulus appears

Doesn't guarantee that people can share attentional resources between tasks; remains possible that P is switching attention between tasks
Automaticity if
- Requires few attentional resources
- Happens without intention

- Serial conjunctive search task: with practice, search became automatic & adding nontargets didn't affect the performance
Happens without intention
- Letter identification is automatic
- Stroop task (say color instead of word): reading the names of the colors happens w/o intention, conflicts w/ attempt to name the color

Long term memory (Ch6)
Explicit
- Supports intentional, conscious recollection of facts, experiences, and concepts
- Stores personal events & experiences
- Encoding: experiencing & putting memories into LTM
- Retrieval:getting info out of LTM & conscious remembering

Episodic and Semantic
Episodic
- Memories associated w/ a particular time and place
- "When was the last time you bought new shoes?"
7 characteristics
- Involves consciousness
- Involves the past & events
- Encoding rapid & automatic
- Retrieval process is required
- Retrieval depends on cues
- Fallible & reconstructive
Semantic
- Knowledge of the world
- Dependent on episodic first (need primary experiences)
2 conceptual problems
All semantic knowledge starts first as episodic
- Some knowledge are kinda both: Episodic - encoded and rehearsed much less than semantic

Implicit
- Characterized by a change in behavior due to past event, w/o the conscious experience of recollection
- Measured not by verbal report but via performance measure
- Not aware of the content of the memory (e.g. learning to ride a bike)
Motor Skill Learning
Knowledge of how to complete a set of motor actions, w/o necessarily realizing we are using it
basal ganglia
Adaptation motor skills:
Adapting to a relationship between vision and movement (visual shifting goggles)

Repetition priming
- Definition: Effect in which performance of a task is biased by one's having seen the same words/pictures sometime earlier
- Makes recently used representations more available to reuse

Emotional conditioning:
- in which the UR is an emotion (e..g fear)
- Amygdala
Classical conditioning:
- Cerebellum and hippocampus
