The blitz
during the period known as the blitz,towns and cities throughout britan were bombed
people had to spend nights in air raid shelters
many volunteered as civil defence workers
at nigth as well as doing a normal job by day
civilians had to maintain a black out at night
thus streelights were not lit and cars had to drive without ligths there were many accidents
Evacuation
The goverment evacuted children and young mothers from the big cities to safer parts of the country
many of the host families were richer,middel class or upper class people
the lives of women
unmarried women were conscripted
women were now given the opportunity to do a wide range of jobs
which meant meant that work at home in farms factories had to be done by women
new freedoms and the chance to learn new skills
conscription was introduced at 1939
rationing
which caused a major change in people lives
families were given books of ration stamps
clothes were rationed
encourged people to save by mending their clothes
grow as much of their own food as are posible and to keep their own animals
the government and welfare
health care was improved
nusiers were set up
special food rations and vitamins for young children and mothers
transport system became a public service
