The Blitz
During the period as the Blitz, towns and cities throughout Britain were bombed.
People had to spend nights in air-raid shelters.
Many volunteered as Civil Defence workers.
Civilians had to mantain a blackout at night.
Cars had to drive whitout lights. As a resuñt there were may accidents.
The goverment and walfare
Health care was improved.
Nurseries were set up.
Special food etions and vitamins were made available to young children and young mothers.
The transport system became a public service.
Evacuation
The goverment evacuated children and young mothers from the big cities to safer parts of the country.
Many of the host ffamilies were richer, middle or upper class people.
The lives of women
Conscription was introduced.
work at home - in farms and factories - had to be done by women.
unmarried wome were conscripted.
Women were now given the opportunity to do a wide range of jobs.
This gave them new freedoms and the chance to learn a new skill
Rationing
Caused a major change in people's lives.
Families were given books of ration stamps.
The board of Trade issues recipes showing people how to make healthy meals using the food that was available.
The goverment also encouraged people to save by mendig their own clothes.
