How to choose the right skincare for you
Step 1: What is your skin type?
Does your skin feel oily and look shiny after a full day of work (A), or does your skin feel dry and parched(B)?
A: Oily Skin (hint: many oily skin types tend to be acne prone too!)
B: Dry Skin
Have you ever had a bad reaction to new skincare products , in particular products with active ingredients such as AHA, BHA, vitamin C, niacinamide etcetera? (The reaction would usually consist of visually reddened skin or a burning/warming sensation.)
A: Sensitive Skin (which means you have a weak skin barrier, AKA you get allergic or react easily to a lot of irritating skincare ingredients)
B: Not Sensitive (your skin is fine with most products and most skincare ingredients, and will not react badly to most)
Have you had any cases of acne before? (You are still considered not acne-prone if you have only had one or two pimples occasionally, but not regularly.)
A: Acne-prone (your skin pores get clogged easily resulting in acne)
B: Not Acne Prone: You are tolerant to most products and do not develop acne easily.
Step 2: What products are suited for you?
If you have sensitive skin
Choose products with minimal ingredient lists to minimise chances of reactions
Ingredients to look out for: Ceramides, Fatty Acids, Panthenol, Glycerin, Aloe Vera
Key words to look out for: products that advertise fixing or soothing your "skin barrier"
If you have dry skin
Cleanser: Choose a cleanser that is "hydrating"/"non-stripping"/"moisturising"/"creamy"
Moisturiser/Sunscreen: Choose a lotion or cream-type texture; the thicker the texture, the better for dry skin
If you have oily skin
Cleanser: Choose a cleanser that is "light"/"foaming"/"gel-type".
Moisturiser/Sunscreen: Choose a gel or lotion-type texture; the lighter and more watery the texture, the better for oily skin
If you have acne-prone skin
Ingredients to look out for: Salicylic Acid (1-2%) or Benzyl Peroxide (2-4%)
Key words to look out for: products for "exfoliating" your skin, "non-comedogenic" products to prevent clogging your skin pores
Step 3: Build your skincare routine
Step 1: Cleanser
Step 2A: Moisturiser
For oily skin types, skip this step in the mornings and go straight to sunscreen.
Step 2B: Sunscreen
Only to be applied in the morning, not at night.
