Word Formation - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Affixation is the formation of words specifically through the help of derivational affixes. It is further subdivided into two categories:
        
        Prefixation: This involves adding a derivational morpheme before the stem, such as adding un- to like to form unlike.
        
        Suffixation: This involves adding a derivational morpheme after the stem, such as adding -ful to hand to form handful.
    - - Some derived words do not use affixes at all because the derivation is achieved through conversion. This occurs when a word changes its grammatical category without changing its form, such as the noun paper becoming the verb to paper.
  - - - There is a specific category of words created by using both derivation and composition simultaneously. These are known as derivational compounds. A standard example of a derivational compound is the word long-legged.
