The Structure of the Word

Morpheme – smallest meaningful language unit
Example: teach/er → teach + er
Phoneme – smallest sound unit, no meaning
Example: t / ea / ch / er
Word – can occur independently, made of morphemes
Morphemic Analysis
Method: I.C. Analysis (Immediate Constituents) – divide word into morphemes by comparing with other words
Example: denationalize → de / nation / al / ize
de: seen in deform, denature
ize: seen in organize, humanize
al: seen in musical, occupational
Types of Morphemes
Free Morpheme – can stand alone
Example: nation, book, girl
Bound Morpheme – cannot stand alone
Example: de-, -ize, -al
Words by Morpheme Count
Monomorphemic – one morpheme
Example: boy, cat, dog
Polymorphemic – two or more morphemes
Example: teacher → teach + er, unreason-able → un + reason + able
Derivational Relations
Morphemes combined according to rules → create stems
Stem – part of word remaining unchanged in paradigm
talk → talk, talks, talked, talking
teacher → teacher, teachers, teacher’s
