SOMMERVILLE - Radical Feminists fail to see the improvements that have been made to women's experiences of the family. Better access to divorce and control over their fertility women are no longer trapped in the family.

Believe men are the enemy and marriage and family are the key institutions which allow patriarchy to exist.
DELPHY AND LEONARD (1992) - Argue that husbands (even when they love their wives) exploit women in the home by making little contribution to housework and childcare. Women are expected to be there for men ( to flatter them, emotionally maintain them and so on).
Criticism - CATHERINE HAKIM (2010) - Points out that it is rarely considered that women rationally choose to get married and willingly take on full time motherhood and housework responsibilities.
Liberal Feminism
Criticism - Fail to challenge the underlying causes of women's oppression and changing the law is not enough to bring about equality. Needs to be a fundamental change in social structure.
Criticism - Overstates the amount of progress that has been made, women still has the triple shift.

Family helps promote cultural norms, stereotypes and attitudes that support patriarchal ideas.
Overall View
Believe the family is a tool of female oppression and in particular the nuclear family serves the needs of men rather than women.

Critical of the Nuclear family in particular - reinforces patriarchy and stereotypical expectations of men and women. It exploits females and fosters issues such as male dominance and domestic violence.

Criticism - Women are no longer a reserve labour force as they have equal rights at work and are as likely as men to be the main breadwinner in the family.
MARGARET BENSTON (1972) - Sees 3 roles of the family in capitalism; Reproduction of labour power, Women's domestic labour and Reserve army of labour.
Criticisms
Ignores choice in families - Postmodernists argue that we have some choice in creating our family relationships.
Ignore the positive aspects of family - Ignore possibility of many women enjoying running a home and raising children.
Out of date theories - Fail to account for recent economic and social changes, such as the educational success of young females.

Intersectional Feminism
Considers the intersecting social structures of gender, race, social class, sexual orientation, religion, ability and age. Interrelated and shaping one another.

Criticisms - neglects the fact that many women do share the same experiences of family regardless of ethnicity or social class.
Fourth Wave feminism

Focus on empowerment of women, the use of internet tools and intersectionality.
