Map symbols
Standard geological maps use specific symbols to mark the axis
Anticline symbol
A line with two arrows pointing away from the axis
Syncline symbol
A line with two arrows pointing towards the axis
Plunge indicator
An arrow on the end of the axial line indicates the direction the fold is plunging into the earth
V shape/plunge direction
Erosion of plunging folds creates a V shape outcrop pattern
Plunging anticline
The V points in the same direction as the plunge
Plunging syncline
The V points in the opposite direction as the plunge
Strike and dip symbols
Check the small T-shaped symbols (strike and dip) on the limbs (sides) of the fold

The dip arrows point away from the central fold axis

The dip arrows point toward the central fold
Age of Rock
Plunging anticline
The oldest rock at the centre of the V shape

The youngest rock at the centre of the V shape
