The Act of Union 1801
The act
abolished the Parliament
in Dublin and Ireland became part of the UK, growing support in the country for Home Rule
Home Rule:
\= self-government for Ireland within the United Kingdom (NOT full independence).

Irish Parliament in Dublin
Control of internal affairs (education, taxes, local laws)
Britain keeps control of army & foreign policy
The Parliament voted for Home Rule several times between 1885 and 1914 but it has always been
rejected by the House of Lords
1916 Easter Rising

in Dublin against British Rule organized by IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood a secret organisation)
consequences
Rebels proclaimed an
Irish Republic
British army suppressed it after 6 days
Leaders executed

Public opinion shifts towards independence
The Irish now want the republic and in
1918 Sinn Fein
, the Irish nationalistic party, won the elections. The members of the party established their own parliament
Continue tensions with British government led to a
civil war
initiated by the
IRA (Irish Repubblican Army
) that lasted until the cease fire in 1921
1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty:
Ireland becomes the Irish Free State (self-governing dominion)
Northern Ireland (6 counties of Ulster) remains in the UK
ā ļø Ireland officially divided.
Disagreements over the partition and the treaty led to a
Civil war in Ireland
1922-23
won by pro-treaty forces
bitterness remains still today,
The Republic of Ireland
as we known today was proclamed in 1949
