ANIMAL NUTRITION
An animal's diet must supply chemical energy, organic building blocks and essential nutrients
Essential nutrients - are required materials that an animal requires, but cannot assemble from simple organic molecules
-
Vitamins - are organic molecules required in the diet in very small amounts e.g. Vitamins A,D,E,K (nonpolar)
-
Minerals - are simple inorganic nutrients, usually required in small amounts. e.g. iron, calcium
-
-
Food processing involves ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination

Feedback circuits regulate digestion, energy storage and appetite
Digestion is regulated by the enteric nervous system and endocrine system through a network of neurons and release and transport of hormones
Regulation of energy storage- energy is stored first in the liver and muscle cells in the form of glycogen. Excess energy is stored in adipose cells
