Statistics
The Statistical Enquiry Cycle
This is the overarching framework for the entire unit. Every other topic fits into one of these stages.
Core Concepts: Posing a question, collecting data, analyzing data, and forming conclusions.
Connections: Links directly to the scientific method they use in Junior Cycle Science.
Tools & Resources: Printed graphics of the Enquiry Cycle for their folders. Real news articles claiming a specific statistic to spark the initial question.
Data Collection
Getting the raw information.
Core Concepts: Population vs. Sample.
Bias and Randomness (Why a bad sample ruins the whole study).
Data Types: Categorical vs Numerical.
Connections: Leads straight into how we design surveys. If we ask the wrong question, we get the wrong data type.
Tools & Resources:
Random number generator apps on iPads for sampling.
Microsoft Forms or Google Forms for students to create their own surveys.
Data Representation (Drawing the Pictures)
Making the data visible and easy to read.
Core Concepts:
Misleading graphs: How the media manipulates axes to change the narrative.
Choosing the right chart: Bar charts, pie charts, histograms, and scatter plots.
Connections: Scatter plots link directly to correlation, showing relationships between two variables.
Tools & Resources:
Canva for creating infographics (like the Meath population posters).
"Spot the mistake" worksheets featuring terrible graphs from real newspapers.
Excel or Google Sheets. Teach them to generate charts digitally rather than just by hand.
Data Analysis
Crunching the numbers to find the truth.
Core Concepts:
Measures of Spread: Range. Standard Deviation
Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median and Mode.
Connections: Links back to the sample vs population idea. Does our sample mean match the population mean?
Tools & Resources:
Online statistics simulators (like PhET) to visually show how outliers drag the mean but leave the median alone.
The Culminating Project (Putting it together)
TY needs a tangible output. This is where they run the whole cycle themselves.
Core Concepts: Applying the entire Statistical Enquiry Cycle independently.
Connections: Ties all previous branches together. They pose a question, collect the data, graph it, analyse it, and present it.
Tools & Resources:
Poster paper, markers, or digital presentation software.
CensusAtSchool Ireland website for massive, relevant datasets if they do not want to collect their own.
